Ford 8n generator question

I have a new to me ford 8n tractor. The generator was bad but it came with a rebuilt generator which I installed today. Before connecting the wire on back of generator, I checked dc voltage coming out. It measured 18v. Have I got the wrong generator or am I checking this wrong. I don't want to damage my 6v battery if I connect the wire on back. Any suggestions or ideas? Thanks in advance. Looking forward to learning more here on this forum.

ompletely normal for an unloaded 6v generator (not connected to battery).

mrrem.........while yer 8N came from the factory 6-volt positive (+) ground, yer genny is quite capable of chargin' 6-volts negative (-) ground. You just haffta "polarize it" fer negative (-) ground. Since many neuibee tractor mechanic wannabees hook up their 6-volt battery negative (-) ground like their 12-volt Barge-mobile. Ittza good practice to re-polarize the genny. Just arc-spark the side-by-side BAT and ARM terminals on yer square can voltage regulator, engine OFF. I use a wide-blade stubby screwdriver, but you kenn use bailin' warr iff'n you want. Recommend you squander $25 (cheap) fer an I&T FO-4 manual. It'll answer alotta questions and it gotts PICTURES........HTH, the amazed Dell

Thanks for the help guys. Forgot to mention the voltage is -18v to ground. So I think this is polarized if I'm thinking correctly. I will be ordering a manual to help with the tractor.
