Bottom half of cyclone pre cleaner missing

Just got an 8n that's a bit of a wreck, got everything handled so far except what to do about this pre cleaner, the cyclone is there and the tube that sticks down is there. Other than that everything below the bottom of the tube is missing. Do I just cap it? Get rid of the tube so out looks cleaner? Leave it open? I think I could fab something up if I had some good measurements and some close up pics but it would probably look like total crap. Any help is much appreciated.

Replacement parts are available on this site or on nnalert
I wouldn't leave it open. Take it off and put it back to original if needed.

I'm not really looking to buy a $160 pre cleaner. I think the cyclone was original on this tractor, I'd have a hole in the
side of the hood if I left it off.

t was for a nasty, dusty, dirt environment, so what are you doing? A full days work in that environment or just hobby farming, or for show? I.E. , Do you need it or not?

Kind of dusty in the summer. It will mainly be used for raking
hay for about 2 months per year and occasional light bush
hogging and food plotting.

Pre-cleaners, as far as I know, were all aftermarket.
They were designed to add filtration for extra dusty conditions.
8Ns originally had a metal door and screen in the hood.
Here's the Air Cleaner Door.
But if you want the pre-cleaner, you don't have to buy the whole thing.
The jar and bail are available to buy individually or as needed.

Thanks, I like it on there and don't mind buying the bail and
the jar or even the gasket. Mine is just missing the round
piece that the jar fits up into. Is that piece available anywhere
that you know of?

Make one out of a jar lid or look on ebay for the whole assy.

I have been thinking about that. Just trying to figure what the
thickest jar lid is that I can come up with. Then I wonder if it
will hold up very well or if the first limb to slap it would tear the
weld out of the lid

I wouldn't over think this. If the lid doesn't break the jar likely will. Best solution is to avoid limbs ;-)

Might save your knee too. :)

After looking at this a little more I think I understand that the
jar only caught larger solids and some dust. Is that correct? If
it is I believe I will just put a piece of radiator hose on it with a
plug in the bottom till I can find an original.

Mine is broken or missing the same way, I don't have the flange or bail to accept a bottle. I will probably just rig up a mason jar with lid on it someday. What I did for now was rubber band a ziplock bag, but anything to act as a sealed reservoir to capture the larger debris will work, just check every once in awhile.

AS mentioned, Dennis Carpenter repops the jars, bails, and gaskets. The 8N cyclone Air Precleaner used a special 1/2 pint jar, with 'Air Cleaner Specialties' on the bottom but you can use a standard Mason jar in place of it. You need the rubber gasket ring between it and the tube cap. You also need the pieces of rubber hose/gasket from the cleaner outlet to the tractor intake port at the air cleaner. These things really work. Also mentioned is the fact that these were not factory OEM parts. The tractors only had a vent/grate held on with a wing nut and stud. Behind it was just a piece of standard metal screen. There is also a funnel that is held on with 4 screws, p/n 8N-9684 which you need for the door and screen. Cyclones were a dealer supplied option sold by Dearborn. Carpenter also sells the standard air cleaner door if you want to put it back to original looking. Carpenter part numbers are door - 8N-9661 and the screen is p/n 8N-9669. Cyclone cup/bail p/n =230053; Cyclone Jar Gasket = ACP-1248; Cyclone Rubber Seal = 230055. I have a nice Cyclone except the previous owner sawed it off at the neck that fits into the air cleaner outlet. My email is open if interested...I can send pictures

Is that correct?

My understanding is just big chit like grass are the such... If you get around to taking the air filter apart and cleaning the mesh you will understand cuss it will be clogged with grass and such...

It was probably the best pre-cleaner they had back then if I wanted a pre-cleaner I am sure I could rig something up much better...
