we were plowing snow, the tires are chained, the tractor got stuck in the snow. Something happened now it wont move. Noise and vibration? by the clutch peddle. Noise is increased with increased throttle. It will shift easily. It will also start in gear. Any thoughts??? I have not moved it yet.

TO in gear, will shaft turn?

Well if the PTO will still spin with a load on it then the problem has to be in the rear end or a stripped out axle hub or broken axle or some such thing. Of PTO will not spin with a load on it then good chance the clutch disk has gone AWOL or transmission input shaft has broken

OK, I wasnt sure what the tractor had instead of a u-joint. All of this happened suddenly so I believe something broke under stress. It is still buried in 3 ft of snow. I am trying to get a head start on where to look

Well as said if you can see if the PTO will spin with a load on it that will help narrow it down. Even the hyd pump with a blade on the 3 point should be enough to load the PTO so you will know if it still spins or not under power. If it does not spin good chance you will need to split the tractor and install a new clutch

So here is what I found out, the pto shaft and pump are working but the pto lever is not connected anymore. I cannot disengage the pto.( by the way thanx for your help)

Remove the right side round inspection port by right boot heel & check the drive shaft, as it is not uncommon for those to break.

ok, what do you think about the linkage from the pto lever? possibly more than 1 issue? at this time I do not have a repair manual

ou can see & feel that too via the port &/or remove the same on the left side for better view/access.

ok, thanx again for your help. Nice weather tomorrow here in Colorado it will be a good day to dig it out

Many times when the driveshaft snaps the broken half swings around and takes out the pto shifter rail.

Hey, I will bet a KNIPCO(tm) heater will warm up the wheels, now.

Frozen brake compartment because of slush. Happens will sett'N.

That happened to me before. I now keep a spare shaft around.
Weak point in the drivetrain.
If Zane has two, buy both.

Good call, removing the inspection cover on the right side I saw that the shaft was broke and I was able to remove part of the shifter rail.I have looked for a reparl manuel but have not found specific info on back end drive line. Any ideas?

You will have to split the tractor at the rear of teh transmission. Shaft is just a splined slip fit on the transmission and pinion shafts - slide the old pieces off and the new one on and rejoin the rear to the transmission.

Was the PTO shifter housing damaged in addition to the rail? In particular the cast in support pedestal that the rail slides through.

yes exactly, that was my next question, how is the cast iron connected? pressed? or do I need to get both pieces?

If that piece was broken off you will need to get a new PTO shifter housing. On any given day there are usually several on eBay. Asking prices vary anywhere from $10 to $100 or more. I have bought several for $10 or less. I'd jump on this one right now if I were you:

8N PTO shifter - complete

The shifter is bolted to the rear of the transmission and shimmed to set the endplay on the transmission shaft. When you remove the old one take care not to let the shaft fall backwards and down into the transmission case. If it does it can be retrieved with some determined fishing but will make you cuss before you get it back where it is supposed to be....
