I purchased an 8N late last year with auxiliary transmission gearing. The seller didn't know much except that the lever had something to do with the speed. He showed me that the lever went up and down. I've owned several 8Ns but had never seen one like this.
According to the serial number, the tractor was produced in early 1951. The lever for the auxiliary gearing is on the left side and is straight unlike what I?ve seen with the Sherman. I originally thought it was either an over drive OR an under drive, I couldn?t tell which not knowing which position was direct, until yesterday when I read about the combo units.
Sure enough, once in neutral I was able to pull out on the lever out and drop it down into an under drive. It?s tight as there is interference between the lever with both the bolts that connect the center body to the rear end and the steering linkage. The pattern is also different from a Sherman
. D Up position, 2 oclock
neutral
U O down position, 5 oclock
O over drive, U under drive, D direct
I suspect the unit is from an obscure manufacturer. I spent several hours searching but came up empty. Anyone have a clue on the manufacturer? Those of you who enjoy cataloging information about the 8Ns are more than welcome to use the photo and any information I?ve supplied. Thanks in advance.
