Early 8N Steering Box Bearing

Hi All, I've been working on Dad's 48 8N since October. Finally got the engine unstuck, and running, new tires, rewired, yada yada yada... Thanks for all the great posts that helped me along on that journey. The problem I have now, is that I found another 48-ish steering box Dad had squirreled away. When I pulled it out of his hidey - hole, I didn't notice the top tube was unbolted, and it came apart. Kind of a good thing though, as one of the bearings was munched, and needs replaced. In the FO-4 manual, it calls this bearing "Worm Bearings" the one in the bottom of the housing still appears fine, since it has plenty of gear oil in it's life time. The question I have, is, are the "Worm Bearings" the same as the upper, and lower thrust bearings, part # 8N3571 ? Sectors are good, and tight, and the ball nut is smooth, and free turning. Other than replacing the broken bearing, and a good cleaning, is there anything else I should replace while I have it apart? Thanks for the help!

The online parts site lists it as "8N3571 - Bearing, Steering
Gear, Worm Thrust, Years: 01-JAN-48-31-DEC-49"
Based solely on that, I would guess they are the same part.
Someone will correct me if that's not right.
Welcome to the forum by the way!

If it were mine I would replace the both worm bearing. I would replace the bearing in the steering shaft tube located under the steering wheel. All the ones I have seen are badly worn as they get very little lube. and since I had it apart I would also replace the sector arm bushing as well.

yup.. top and bottom thrust bearings are the same.

as another poster said. replace the little bushing/bearing under the steering wheel too. it centers the wormshaft at the top of the tube.
