hello all

Bought a 61 SOS 871 this past fall. 3rd owner, ran great until i left the fuel line open over a few days.

Started her up, ran her across the farm and she stalled. I looked at the carb and it was pouring out gas from the bottom. Was able to get her into the garage with no issues.

Flash forward a few weeks and got a 7' blade for her to plow the driveway. She started up fine then stalled when I attached the blade. I realized when i did get her started again, it would slowly stall out but stay alive if i choked the carb.

I recently ordered a tune up kit and replaced plugs, points, condenser, sediment bowl and oil / filter. Im having the same issues as before.

I noticed the gas is leaking out of the bottom of the carb again (dribbling) and started adjusting the needles according to the manual. I can get her to run at lower rpms and it stalls. I can get her to run at higher rams and it stalls before a full minute.

would it be safe to say the float is stuck and is flooding the carb out? I'm thinking since I left the fuel line open it wreaked havoc on my carb and may be gummed up.

Thoughts?

It would be save to say that something is wrong with the carburetor and needs to be fixed. That may or may not fix your "won't run" issue ;-)

thanks Hokie! i saw another post with something similar on an 8N. Dell had mentioned a nice checklist of things to go through while doing a tune up.

I think the zenith carb is suspect, the gasket has a nice burnt gummy look to it. but i think i need to rule out the point adjustment first just to be safe.

Sure sounds like a sticking needle valve,
new points won't fix that, gotta open the
carb and rebuild it, easy and cheap.
Sometimes in the meantime till parts arrive
you can wack the carb bowl with a
screwdriver handle and get the float and
needle to free up for a bit
