pertronix-left key on battery dead

8N out of gas, left the key on, battery was dead (SE Michigan freezing temp) charged battery, but it would not start. I have not checked it out for spark, fuel, etc. Scared. How bad could it be? Most likely damaged parts? ??

Front mount distributor or side mount?
Knowing if it was 6V or 12V might help too.
First thing I would do is verify it is a spark issue.
Then check for power to the ignition and go from there.

OEM style coil mounted to the dist as original are is the coil remote to the dist...

You would check the ignition module just like you would a points ignition. All you would need is a 12V test light to determine the direction you need to go...

To determine if the coil triggers the coil.

Check power to the module, if OK check module trigger to the coil with a rest light.. If OEM style coil mounted to the dist as original remove the coil and probe with a test light to the coil contact point were the coiled look'N spring contacts the brass screw with a test light, does the light blink when you turn the engine over with the starter. If yes its a coil issue if no backtrack to the module.

"I would say that the electronic ignition is toast."

It very well could be, but right now we don't even know if its a
spark issue.
Could be it sucked up a bunch of rust since it ran out of gas.
Could be a $15 coil or a $12 key switch too.
I'd hate to have him throw a $100 module in it without testing
first. That can get to be an expensive lesson! :)

am i missing something here? why is it assumed to be an EI?

oh, duh. i'll guess that's what pertronix makes

how dare that be hidden in the subject line ;)

Check spark, if none, check power to module next. If that passes check coo continuity, or get creative and test coil with a switch and a condensor...

...and Pertronix has a test procedure for their module. I think it is in the paperwork that comes with it. If not, it is available online or by calling them. They are very nice and helpful on the phone.

When I used a Pertronix(and I was a great fan of their system until I had two module failures within a year without leaving a key on), I always had a spare set of points and condenser available.

Test the module per the Pertronix instructions. If the module is shot, you can buy just the replacement module not the whole kit. But get that set of points and condenser as a back up if you really need to use the tractor.
