On a front mound distributor, there are these threaded bolt looking things with a head with holes in them. Is this some sort of "breather"? Are they even necessary? They look like they would just allow more moisture into the distributor?

reathers. I doubt the Ford engineers would have spent the money unless they thought necessary, but??????????
Perhaps a condensation problem without same?

Most have those vents. Without them, condensation will form inside during outside temperature changes. The vented distributors do much better at preventing condensation inside than the non vented ones.

In the photo, look at the lower left side and see if this is what we are talking about. If so, then yes, it is a breather vent and like JMOR said, it wouldn't be there if FORD didn't deem it necessary. Picture courtesy of Bruce Haynes.

Starting it every month and running it to operating temperature will solve that problem as well as keeping your battery from sulfating.

(quoted from post at 16:18:40 01/30/16) Hmmm,
Unlike radiator shrouds?

Hahaha Now that is funny!

Back to the question: My buddy has an early 8N with a front distributor on his trailer queen (Used once a year in a parade). Every year the points were corroded. He asked me to look at it. The breather was completely painted over. I cleaned it off good, then cleaned it with carb cleaner to make sure it could breath. It has been 4 years since I did that and it has started every year with no issues. I think they certainly help.

Radiator shrouds.......well that is another discussion
