Good day everyone, Working on my 58 Ford 601 tractor for the last few days which wouldn't run. Ended up replacing a broken carb, rebuilding the distributor, and completed the tuneup by adding new points .025, condenser, plug wires, coil, cap and rotor. I have made sure that the rotor was facing the number (1)one cylinder and timing marks on the flywheel is at 4* as the manual stated. I installed the wires as the book recommend using the fashion of 1243 CCW. Engine would not run smoothly, sneezing out the carb. While it was running and semi idling, i started pulling the wires one at a time to see which cylinder was misfiring. Removal of #1 closes to the radiator made a vary little difference, same as the removal of #4 cylinder which was pretty cool the old girl still ran but with out a miss of sneezing on two cylinders. I messed with the wire placement and finally got it to smooth out with out sneezing. The odd thing is i know on the distributor the wire placement as stated is 1243 CCW, but the rotation i ended up with is opposite going clockwise. What am i missing? What did i do wrong?

When you reinstalled the distributer how did you insure #1 was at the top of the compression stroke? Don't forget that you could easily have it timed to the top of the exhaust stroke.
If you can turn it over slowly you can stick your thumb in the spark plug hole and feel it make compression. Then continue to turn the crank shaft till it hits the timing mark.
Then install the distributer.

I'm with Bruce on this one. The 8N distributor rotation is 1243 CCW and my 53 Golden Jubilee is 1243 CW. I believe the 601 has the same engine as the Jubilee, so I believe you are consulting the wrong book.
