8n not starting

I just bought an 8n with a side mount distributor that wasn't running at the time I bought it. I put a new carb on it and still wouldn't fire. So I went ahead and gave it a full tune up. I put a coil, points and condenser(gap set to .025), cap and rotor on it. I had it running for a few minutes but it would only run with the choke pulled out. Now it tries to start but just won't do it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Got good spark? Will it jump a 1/4" gap at each plug? If spark is good check for fuel flow. Remove the pipe plug on the bottom of the carb and catch gas in a clean container. Will it flow steady for two minutes? Report back. Narrow it down to fuel or ignition and then we cfan be of further help.

if it runs with the choke out it sounds like its not getting enough fuel even with a new carb, if nobody has changed things there is a screen in the sediment bowl, and another in the in part of that which screws up into the gas tank, plus there is supposed to be a 3rd one in the elbow of the carb, id pull the gas line off and see what kind of fuel flow you have, it should be a good sized pee stream for lack of a better description, if it doesn't have that you need to track it upstream until you find whats restricting the flow, if it has good flow the carb isn't set correctly and its not letting the fuel thru it, adding choke enriches the mixture, so if that makes it run that means not enough fuel when the choke is pushed it

greenie.........ummn? putta new carbie on 'cuz it wouldn't run was probably a semi-smart thing to do. WHY would you expect a new carbie to be ready to run??? Thats WHY they have "tweek'ems". Every carb needs to be adjusted to the engine it is powering. Coils and condensers seldom go bad but POINTS always need replacing. (0.025 is correct fer 5-nipple sidemount) Didja remember to "polish" the INVISIBLE corrosion from between the points??? Me I'd stick the corner of $1-bill (cheep) between the points and PULL. Simple, eh? As fer yer carbie, set the down-pointing MAINJET to 2-turns and LEAVITT!!! Adjust the side-pointing idlemix fer FASTEST idle, NOT SMOOTHEST idle. Understand the difference??? The idlemix is BASSACKWARDS, out fer lean, IN fer ENRICH. Usually ends up about 1/8-1/4 turn. Ennytime you haff starting issues, replace yer sparkies. Recommend AutoLite 437's gapped 0.025. Don't throw yer FLOODED sparkies away, just clean'n'dry 'em one-atta-time in HOT runnin' engine and save'um fer the next time (and there will be a NEXT time).....HTH, Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

My 8N. I always take a peak at the points to see if their arcing when I first dive into a no-start.

Now that's its dark out early. It should not be to hard to check for arc/spark.

Some years back I remember watching my 8N idle in the dark. The ignition wires were arcing all over the place like a lightning storm. I ended up replacing them.

Might want to check the firing order if its a new to you tractor bought not running.

You got some great advice here. Do you think you may have discharged the battery some trying to start her up. In any case set a charger on it.

You next need to see if it is/was a gas or electrical issue. I say was because you took a shotgun approach and now need to make sure everything you replaced really works.

At the very least I would make sure the spark plug wires are correctly installed.

Secondly does a spark jump the gap on each plug while cranking the engine and grounding the plug to the head. If you have access to a spark jump checker even better.

If not concentrate on the electrical system. Remember you replaced a lot at once.

If so, I would give a spritz or 2 of your favorite starter spray into the carbs throat and see if see attempts to kick over.

if it does I would concentrate on the carb as the others have outlined.

hell of a checklist here, I think it pertains to my new thread posted today. Im gonna try to use this advice for my 61sos871.

thanks dell!
