Need some help! Never owned a tractor before and bought a ford 8/9n. Front mount distributor, appears to
have been converted to 12v. All wiring is old and cracking so I want to start over. I have some aptitude
and willing to learn. Tractor did run upon purchase but not now. Battery went dead so I bought a new one.
It worked for a week and then went dead again. Would like to know what wiring harness to buy and what
diagram to use to properly reconnect for 12v use as well as the two coolant hoses. I have purchased a tune
up kit as well as new cap and wires, resistor, connector on the size of the alternator. Oil and ammeter
guages work. Not sure if it is a 8 or 9. # on side of block starts with 8 but # by gear box starts with 9.
Anyone willing to help? Appreciate your time. Thanks and have a great week. Tekman1966

should have mentioned, it's not uncommon to have a hybrid. u could have an 8N engine in a 9 or a 2.

Welcome to the forum.
As HFJ said, the 8N has 4 forward speeds and two brake pedals
on the right instead of having one on the left like the 9N/2N.
The engines can be interchanged though.

For wiring diagrams Google "wiring diagrams by JMOR".
He's made some really nice, easy to follow pictograms for us.

I would also recommend reading and saving the [b:fc24c25c49]75 Tips[/b:fc24c25c49]
from Bruce and Soundguy.

Do you have a generator or an alternator?
If an alternator it is almost always 12V negative ground.
If you want to buy a harness instead of making your own,
this site sells one for a one wire Delco alternator.

As far as the hoses, they're pretty standard. Only oddity about
them on the N's is that the upper one is supposed to have a
thermostat installed in it. Actually in the hose, not in a housing.

One last awesome resource is John Smith's site [b:fc24c25c49]here.[/b:fc24c25c49]

Another 9N/2N quick ID from an 8N is the rear hubs and wheel centers.

I don't know if you could buy a wiring harness that will match your conversion. If it's a home made conversion you will have to make your own.

1) What type of alternator.
2) Is it mounted on your left side are right side of the engine as you set on the tractor.

I buy a replacement OEM 6V style harness for a early 8N 48 to 50 for the right side mount are a 50 1/2 to 52 for a left side mount alt and adapt it to the alt. Its just a matter of adapting it to a alt connector and jumping the wires that would have went to the voltage regulator. I trash the amp meter and use a volt meter, then add a key switch to excite the alt. The correct alt pulley is extremely important and most of the time has the wrong one installed.

JMOR has the wiring diagram for my conversion if not he can draw one up for you... Know one I know of sells a decent 12V conversion harness that I would have. It would be nice to see what you have we like PIX's...

with a few wires as these old girls use, you could make one yourself with a roll of 14awg, some connectors and wire loom or black tape. wire it point to point leaving excess for making a harness, then loom it or tape it.

If you bat's are going dead, presumably you have a 3 wire alt and you are leaving it's excite line energized full time.

i'll second this. it doesn't get much simpler than the wiring on these.

i didn't think soundguy's comment was intended to be a complete and literal set of instructions. i personally love to wire stuff, and i happen to have a lot of wire on hand as a result. i don't actually have any 14g i'd use for this job. i've got 5 colors of 12g, and 10 and 6g in black. i'm pretty sure i can replace my 2N's wiring and neither undersize anything nor create a nightmare no one could figure out.
