rear axle lock nut

Your not going to believe this.I just bought another 48-8n 12 volt. I have no brakes on the right side and the brakes on the left side are nothing to write home about. But the most unusual thing is somebody welded the nut to the axle on the left side. I know it's suppose to be torqued to 450 lbs. Now I have to buy a axle and a brake hub. Doggone hillbillies just wondered what else they did to it.

rind the weld off and see what it looks like.

What Jmor said. Then use a rethreader that starts at the back of the thread and works it's way out. Or a good thread file.

It is very common to find an axle nut welded to the axle on 8n's. Odds are the hub was shot before they welded the nut to the
axle.

davyfireball where are you located?
I have a pair of 8N axles here in MI if you need one or two.
I think I have a good hub I bought from John and didn't use too.

You may get lucky. I had the same thing on a case 310 crawler. I used my grinder to grind one side of the nut off. Only thing I cut off to much and got into the shaft. If I would have cut 1/4 inch less my drive axle would have been fine or if I would have concentrated on the end of the shaft where it was welded I would have been okay. Threads under there were fine. So if you take your time with a grinder you might be able to get it off and the threads may be okay. Worth a try. Some times those nuts are welded so they wont come loose. Just my c cents worth,
