I picked up an 8N this summer, its a 48 front dist. It was starting poorly when I got it, the previous owner had removed the pipe from the carb to the air cleaner. I found that when I reinstalled the pipe, then richened up the main mixture to 1-3/4 turns out it started quite well. As the temperature dropped from fall into winter I found the starts getting worse, it would turn over find but would not fire. The fuel flow was adequate, good spark but still no start. I found that if I pulled each plug and gave each cyl a squirt of fuel it would fire up instantly, so what I was having is a fuel problem, the choke was just not effective enough. After a fair bit of research on this site I discovered that my choke plate was missing a few pieces, it is supposed to have a spring loaded door, mine has just an open hole in the plate. I fabricated a new choke plate out of a piece of 0.032 aluminum and tested it out. It now starts quite well in the cold, without preheat it'll start up just fine at -15 degrees C or + 5 F to you folks down south, not bad for an original 6V system in my opinion. If you're having cold starting problems, it might be worth checking out. Cheers
