Not used much but need printer-want scanner--don't want an ink drinker--not gonna pay a lt for one -wife just uses occasionally to print page or two of geneology stuff-home use..Had Epson junk before -last biggest pile of junk was Kodak that was suppose to be so wonderful--it was no good..drank ink-etc..Please advise..just a few opinions/experiences will be fine--tired of agonizing over this..Thanks

We have had a Cannon 7000 for ten years or so. No problems, doesn't take that much ink, scans. No idea at all what we paid.

My EPSON experience doesn't mirror yours.

I have TWO EPSON XP-310's and they have been GOOD machines, certainly not unusually hard on ink, and have 4 individual ink tanks so there's no waste, just what's empty gets replaced.

They scan and have memory card slots, and are wireless AND have ethernet jacks for wired use.

I agree with you on the Kodak, though, we had two, they were hyped up as having "low cost of operation", ink didn't last long, and they shut off without a low ink warning just when they were really needed.

If you don't need color, buy an inexpensive home laser printer
instead of an ink jet. They use dry toner instead of ink cartridges.
It never dries out and is good for years.
Toner cartridge for mine cost $55 dollars, but it is going on 10
years and still working.
If you need color, weigh the cost of ink compared to color toner.

Tom,I had had many different brands of printers in the past, and can't say to much good about any of them. I have a Brother wireless 3 N 1 Fax,Scan,Print MFCJ625DW for about 2 or more years now and like it ok and it does a good job.Only thing it seems to like ink,but I think they all do.Going to try and refill the cartridges next time it needs ink.

Tks Den --looking amd getting more confused--gotta be wireless--decided I think that laser is way to go because of ink useage--color is not important-she will be fine with just B and W..so when u find one you think is iT then reviews say that the wireless works sometimes or some such problem...

Laser--good point--mine at work is laser and lasts forever on a cartridge--most likely the
way we will go.. Tks

The ink for the all in one set up was to expensive for me... I moved it into the office for the rare time I would use it to copy are fax...

I brought a decanted printer with color so far so good... The all in one was costing me $30 a mon. in ink when about all I was doing was printing repair orders and the occasional copy deal. I have had it for about a year I paid $200 for it and all I have done is add paper.

As you would expect, the HL-3170CDW supports automatic double-sided printing, a collection of cloud-printing options including Apple AirPrint and Google CloudPrint, and multiple connection points for wired and wireless customers. These features make it a worthwhile business purchase at its standard $279 retail, but you can get it at OfficeMax for just $199.99. At such a low price tag for a wealth of productive features, the Brother HL-3170CDW is a no-brainer recommendation for offices that value both black and color prints in a reliable laser printer.

Its paid for its self and made money...

I need a printer in the shop to print from several different computers and from my diagnostic tools. I would have to shoot thru a to many barriers to get it to print in the office. I am not a office guy don't fence me in...

One more vote for laser here. I had three ink jets in the house one time and couldn't print a page because they were either out of ink or dried up. I threw the whole lot out and bought a Brother B&W laser and now I can print any time I want, even after months of inactivity. It's the only way to go.

My printer gets used far more than average and if I used the ink carts would cost a fortune to operate. I switched to external ink tanks and they work great and are cheap to use. I buy the ink in 8 oz. bottles and they will last me a couple of years. I have an all in one Epson and it takes 4 ink colors. I can buy the 4, 8 oz. bottles of ink for about $50.00, which is about what 2 sets of carts would cost and they wouldn't last me a month. I bought the printer with the system installed from "Cobra Ink". You can also just buy the system and install it yourself if you don't need a new printer. You can find them on the web, they are located in Tennessee. They have several different styles of printers and they are real good folks to deal with.

If all you need is B&W you will get the most bang for you buck out of a low end laser and just about everything these days is all in one. The biggest issue with ALL of the low end machines, klaser, ink jet, or otherwise, is the durability of the small plastic parts - e.g. paper trays, document feeders, etc. They are extremely fragile and when (not if) they break the cost of repair exceeds the value of the machine.

Based on several decades of professional office use I am an HP laser printer guy - excellent high speed document quality at a reasonable price point. But if you need high volume color output they will eat a hole in your wallet both in initial cost and consumables.

The Epson Artisan color inkjet sitting next to me produces slick pictures but is incredibly slow even with normal B&W printing and drinks ink which costs $150+ for a set of 6 "normal capacity" cartridges. The "high capacity" ones are even more and don't last a whole lot longer. When TOOH gets going good she can run it dry in a week or two. May just be be the nature of picture printers......

We stopped buying consumer level stuff a long time ago. You will end up on a merry go round of bad machines expensive ink and lack if capabilities. If the unit is sold. In walmart, staples or best buy we aren't interested. We do a lot of printing though.

We buy off lease comercial machines. They last about 10 years and toner is a LOT less expensive and plentiful from 3rd parties. Out current colour lasee is rated for 36000 pages for a cartridge. Where consumer ones are something like 500 or so. Our cartridges are about 25 or 30 bucks each there are 4 in it. Plus a 30 dollar waste tray.drum replacem ts are about 80 bucks each. If you get.one that's off lease it's been looked after professionally.

Oh ya one more thing I forgot to mention. The most frustrating thing about some of the consumer units is that if any if the ink tanks or toners are out none of the functions work! We had some docs to scan to be sent on Monday and the magenta ink tank ran out and the thing held us for ransom until it was replaced. So that's a good question to ask when buying one of these.

So complicated--I think I'll give her a first grade tablet and a wooden pencil and tell her
to get after it...

"So complicated--I think I'll give her a first grade tablet and a wooden pencil and tell her to get after it..."

But then you'll have to buy tablet refills, pencil sharpeners, erasers and/or white-out. It could get expensive!

Then she would want one of those fancy dancy mechanical pencils and it would stay broke
down all the time---fellow jist can't win..
