My NAA drive pinion bearings expired and messed up the pinion. I found a used ring gear and pinion. I have installed all new bearings (cups and cones) on the pinion and differential carrier. Installed pinion carrier in center housing. Installed right axle housing. Installed differential. Everything looked good until I bolted the left axle housing to the center housing. It fit and tightened up OK, but I can"t turn the pinion. I know it won"t turn free, but it should turn shouldn"t it? The pinion has a taped hole in it on the splined end. I put a bolt in it and tried to turn with a 1/2" ratchet, but it is locked tight.
Questions: 1. Should I be able to turn the pinion. 2. If the answer is yes, any suggestions on what to check?
My only thought is to pull the pinion carrier out some to see if the problem is preload on the differential carrier bearings or if the ring gear and pinion are meshing too tight.
Any Ideas?[/u]
