I checked the plugs. No 1 was real oily, no 2 not as bad, 3/4 looked good. After soaking the no 1 -2 cylinders 3 times I finally decided to pull the pistons. I have no 1 piston out. no ring groove at all. nice clean sleeves. top two compression rings were free and looked good. The oil ring was completely compressed. I had to actually use a screw driver to get it out. So I think that was my problem with that cylinder. Bearing cap and crank looks great. Got the head and the top of the block cleaned up. Ordered new gasket set and rings. Just need a little warmer weather so I can work on it. Rain and cold weather here last couple days. I will post as I go along. thanks norm

Glad you found it.
That's the kind of thing an ATF soak can fix.
Broken rings it will not.

I know other people told me I should soak it some more but patience some times is may be my weakness. thanks norm.

Yep a good week or so ATF soak and then running a qt of ATF in say 3-5 gal of gas also helps a lot. Me if compression numbers look good I tend to run them and many times the oil burning will slow down a whole lot

Pinball, Here is some excellent piston and ring info and clearances for you to read and follow.I would also replace the rod bearings, with new ones while in there.Order the correct standard or under sized rod bearings.

Norm, Listen to Den. If you rebuild the top of the engine without replacing the bearings (and checking the clearance) You will hasten the wear in the lower half of the engine.
