Axle Pivet Pin

Well , I was successful in beating out this axle pin. A 1 1/4 HF deep impact socket works perfect. I might add that these sockets seem pretty tough and easily handle the blows from a BFH. But a question comes to mind as I study the wear on the 68 year old pin. I wonder why Ford decided it did not need a grease zerk? It would be in an awkward place, but seems reasonable. Bill

I think the grease would just attract dust/chaff/dirt, which
would then act as sandpaper and worsen the wear effect.

Glad to hear you got it out.

The Ford theory was the grease would hold dirt and accelerate wear. Personally I don't think that theory holds water ;-) There are literally tens if not hundreds of thousands of examples to the contrary operating in the field today.

I have replaced that pivot bearing in my tractor once.
I lube the bearing area with graphite sometimes powder, sometimes spray, years later it is still working good,
So far so good!

Graphite will not attract dirt

(quoted from post at 15:36:50 11/19/15) TOH, I always figured fresh grease would force out any old dirty grease if it was done on a regular basis.

Works that way on my other equipment. And assuming you grease them on a regular basis very little grit or dirt actually gets inside the joints because it gets trapped at the margins.

I guess Henry and his engineers figured the farmer would never grease the pivot axle anyway so why waste time adding a grease zerk.
My old 1957 TO35 Ferguson does not have one either, so Harry Ferguson must have been of the same opinion.

My manual said to use graphite, that's why I give it a dose when I think of it.

My 1957 AC D14 wide front axle tractor had a grease zerk at the pivot pin.
