starter/solenoid

I tried to post yesterday but I must of not hit submit.
8N tractor started a few weeks back. Went out to start it and would hardly crank over. Charged the battery but no help. I changed out the battery with a new one just to make sure. Still tractor turns over very slow and sometimes not at all. Once in a while the solenoid will just click and other times nothing. One footnote: last year I had to tap on starter a couple of times to get it to turn over but then the rest of the year did not have to do anything.

Things that I have done.
1. changed battery
2. checked neg. cable to make sure had good ground and no rust.
3. pulled solenoid off and going to try a new one.
4. Tried to look at wiring and all looks ok.
5. Lights on battery our strong even when battery won't crank tractor over.

Stumped. Any ideas would be great. Thanks in advance.

Rex,The brushes are probably worn down,or brush springs are weak. When you taped it with a hammer it worked for awhile again.Take to a rebuild shop ,or if you can replace the brushes yourself order some brushes, new bushings and replace them.Note it takes a heavy soldier iron tho replace them.

Try a jump right from the battery to the starter stud. Be sure it is out of gear when you do that. If it turns over then you have a connection problem some place be it the + side or - side. If it does not turn over that way the starter is likely to be bad or going bad.

everytime that has happened to me it has been the "L" shaped starter ground strap. Just remove it and give it a good sanding.

I have changed out the solenoid and that is not the problem.
I am going to make sure all connections are sanded and have good clean contact.

This weekend I will do some electrical checking but am pretty sure it is the starter. I will let everyone know what I find out.
Thanks for everyones ideas.

Can you tell me the process of jumping straight to the starter.
My tractor has been converted to 12V.

1. Disconnect battery cable from tractor.
1. Positive jumper cable from battery to tractor starter lug bypassing solenoid?
2. Neg. from battery to frame of tractor?

Then turn key to on position?

Are these steps correct?

No reason to unhook any thing. Just use heavy jumper cable and go from the ignition side of the battery to the starter stud. Does not matter if you turn it on since all your doing is testing the starter to see if it will spin like it should

don't get hurt checking.

make sure out of gear and in neutral, and clutch blocked if you are playing around testing the starter / relay.. etc.

Update: Cleaned all connections with sand paper and wire wheel. All the way back to wiring block.
Even changed out ground strap from battery to frame.
Took jumper cable and went from positive battery post to starter L shape bracket post. Nothing but a few sparks. Starter did not turn over. Solenoid is good. Just clicks.

So does starter need to come off and go to a shop to test? Not sure if it is the starter or starter driver?

Thoughts?

If all you got was sparks and the starter did not turn the engine over then good chance your starter is bad and need to be rebuilt or replaced

Thanks for your help.
I have checked everything out from an electrical standpoint and the only thing I can think of is starter is bad also.
Thanks for your help.
