8N 12v Battery

Need to replace my 12v battery and my tractor is 100 miles away. What battery will fit in my tray? I didn't write down the current everstart model I have.

not exactly what you are looking for, but your battery tray originally fit a group 1 6v battery.

that is:

9 1/8 w
7 1/8 h
9 3/8 h

I've included a link to a battery chart that can help you find a replacement.

Without looking I can tell you a grp 35 fits those dimensions.

dang phone messed it up.

measurements I gave are

l w h

9 1/8 l 7 1/8 w 9 3/8 h

grp 35 is:

9 1/16 l 6 7/8 w 8 7/8 h

The original 6V battery is Group Size 1 - 9-1/8 (L) x 7-1/8 (W) x 9-3/8 (H).

A 12V Group 25 battery is just slightly smaller at 9-1/16 x 6-7/8 x 8-7/8.

Be careful hooking it up. If you reverse the polarity, you will fry the alternator.

My preference is Deka batteries, but a Duracell or Rayovac are also made by East Penn.

Group 25 & 35 are exactly the same size: http://www.evdl.org/pages/bcigroup.html

if the hundred series battery tray is the same size as an N, you can also use a group 58. Chrysler battery. slightly shorter than the group 35, but otherwise the same.

was a nice fit in my 640

Same size but with post positions reversed.

Good Catch. Guess it doesn't really matter since I can position the battery in either direction. Just need negative inboard.

Makes a difference if the battery cables are not long enough to accommodate the front to back swap or left to right swap.

Here is a picture to illustrate a situation where it makes a difference. That is a Group 35 installed negative ground and the starter cable wouldn't reach the positive post on a Group 25.

As most 12v N's are negative ground, the Group 25 would be the correct battery, right?

Unless you want to replace a cable.

Either one will fit just fine but you need to be aware of the post placement and the length of your cables. That picture is a 12V negative ground using the OEM cable and a Group 35 battery. If I had used a Group 25 battery I would have needed a longer starter cable to reach the positive post which would either be up against the back of the battery box or on the opposite side. Of course in truth I need a new cable anyway since the old 6V positive ground starter cable was originally on the negative post and is too small to properly fit the larger positive post. It "works" but it's not "right". I'm a bit "anul" about such things ;-)
