OT Pole Barn

I've heard people here and other places talk about building a pole barn.

Can someone please tell me what exactly is the definition of a pole barn?

This shop is built using pole barn construction. Instead of being framed up on concrete it has posts set in the ground at 8' intervals and then horizontal 2x6 girts. .trusses are 8' on center. Usually don't save anything unless it's a really big building. The last one I had built was 40x70 w/ 14 foot sidewalls. This one is 38x50 and is where I work on my tractors etc. I just bought this property next to my house 2 months ago. It took 6 years before the previous owner finally agreed to sell it

In this area a lot of them are used for hay storage. Just a line of poles set into the ground to hold a roof up allowing access to the hay from either end (sometimes) and allow the hay to continue drying if put up a little damp. Variations include one or more walls sheeted to keep the weather out.

some of my pole barns or sheds.

some call them poor boy barns.

rich boys sheds have concrete floors complete with wash drains.

google 'friction pile' and it may help you understand the concept of a 'pole' barn.

Also, some ( many? ) jurisdictions do not require ( building / drainiage )permitting for Ag related 'pole barns' that have no electrical or water, and no prepaired flooring past dumped and spread gravel.

If you want a clear overhead go pre-engineered steel for about the same price. This 40 x 75 "kit" was $25K delivered - included doors, windows, and insulation. Concrete and block foundation extra - some assembly required ;-)
