I just put a new head gasket on my 45 9N i have not even started it up yet . and noticed its leaking in the same place it was before. one fella said i may need a new block . another said i may need a new head . i just don't know . i have built engines so its not like i have never done this before . but this has me scratching my head .... if i do end up buying a block , lord help , then any ideas on a good empty block ?

I have built over 30 engines and always have machine shop check head and block. Usually have to plain head and about have the time to plain block. On the Willys F-head. If you do any plaining you need to get shorter head bolts or the old bolts will bottom out and always have a leak Good Luck

J9n,Did you check or have the head checked for being warped ,after you removed it,or just bolt it back on? Check or have the block checked with a straight edge. If the block is warped it can be machined,If the head is warped,(that should have been checked when you had it off)it can be machined also.

I would be suspecting one or more cracks in the water jacket....

Wait till you get it running. Let it warm up and then just put a can of Bar's leak in the radiator and run it for a couple of hours. I bet you
it will quit leaking.

Just an old school 80 year old N mechanic.

Of course if you are planing on flying it you may want to consult an Aircraft mechanic.

Not many water cooled airplanes, so you don't have to worry about Barsleak in the sky. Thought owners of piston-engined small aircraft, which are notorious for ring problems, buy their Marvel Mystery oil by the gallon, FAA or no FAA.

Oh I did read a book once about the sub NAUTILUS making the first trip under the North Pole. Just as the were about to set off they found a leak in one of the cooling systems. Rather than scrub the trip they sent a couple crewmen off in a taxi to buy as much auto stop leak as they could find, which they dumped in, and finished the trip on schedule.
