OT woodsplitter

Just the basic old woodsplitter w/5 HP briggs. Got it running and working but when it gets under a tough load like a crotch the engine kills. Governor? Just asking before I take it apart. Motor is running strong and has new rings and good comp.
Thanks
Pike

I would say governor,
when my old splitter hits a hard spot, the motor is a little bigger, but you can still hear it open up some and plow right on through. (30 years old)

might try a new plug, non ethanol gas, some sea foam conditioner in the gas, be sure it has a clean air filter, new fuel filter, if it has one.

anything before tearing into the carb, as I am not that good on such.

how big is the ram? is the engine achieving full throttle?,remove the air cleaner and make sure that the throttle blade is fully open when the control is at the full throttle position, if not your not getting the full 5 hp, also i agree check and see if it has a 2 stage pump, does it have a hydraulic filter? is it recently replaced so it isnt slowing the fluid down, while 5 hp is the very minimum for a wood splitter it sounds like your not getting the full power out of it

Thanks for all the replies. I will check all today. I guess it had a filter at one time but it was removed. I don't know about the relief valve but will check. Two stage? Dunno. Hydraulics escaped me.
Gary, will do.

The governor is just a spring loaded throtle pull. Disconnect the governor or immobilize it at a decent RPM and see if that helps.

After a quick lesson from GB in MT on the carb, I enriched 1/2 turn (keep yer itchy twitchy finners off those carb settings). Voila! Works perfectly now. Gary nails it again and I can retire my splitting maul after 50 years service. Thanks Gary!
