how to replace front tranny input seal

can someone give me the procedure for changing this seal. I am replacing ring gear and clutch and everyone seems to recommend changing the tranny input seal. From archive reading it looks like it's hidden inside a sleeve with a four bolt cap somewhere behind the thrust bearing? I'm also not sure how many seals are needed, is there one seal or two seals in there. What is involved here, do you slide the old one off and the new one on?

Paragraph 113 page 72 in FO-4 will tell you how to do the job. At least in my version. 1 seal and 1 gasket.

Since the tractor is split all you need to do is remove the four cap bolts and slide it out. Seal will be in the shaft housing. Gasket placement is obvious. No gasket sealer needed.

As a add on to what the other's said, when I replaced my seal after removing the 4 bolts I needed to 'nudge' the sleeve using a non steel hammer (I used a rubber tipped as don't have a brass hammer). What I wasn't expecting was the input shaft came out too. No sealer on reassembly.

I would suggest if you are going to change the input shaft seal and gasket you drain your trans first so that the fluid level is below where your input shaft enters the trans.Since you have not said but are posting in this section that it is a 9n/2n/8n tractor. This type tractor has all one fluid so they are all mixed between the trans/hyd/rear. So make sure you have at least a 5 gallon bucket on hand or more to catch the fluid. I did a 9n this past week that had 5 gallons of fluid just in the trans. Any water will settle to the bottom of the case so crack the drain plug first and let the water come out before the oil.
After you replace your seal and gasket I usually replace the fluid and with a floor jack tip the front of the bellhousing down, throw an oil pan under it, leave it overnight and if nothing is in the pan the next morning go ahead and button it up.
