1950 8n grinding noise

Hello, I just purchased my first 8n and with the engine running
in neutral and the clutch pedal released I am getting a
grinding noise. When I press the clutch down the noise will
go away. It seems to shift ok. Any information would be
great, thank you!

Markgmurray ,By your explanation it could be a bad/rough transmission input bearing or a bearing in the transmission that is bad.

Does it sound the same with the PTO on as with it off?
The lever to turn it on and off is the on the inspection
cover by your left heel as you set on the tractor.
Clutch needs to be depressed when shifting the lever
if the tractor is running.

It doesn't seem to make a difference with the PTO lever. The
only thing that will make it stop is depressing the clutch pedal
and holding.

Thank you

Do you have any recommendations for a transmission repair manuals. I am a heavy diesel mechanic but unfortunately not a lot of experience with older tractors. Also are they fairly straight forward to work on? Thanks for the help.

It was worth a shot. The hydraulic pump runs off the
PTO shaft and they are know to "knock" when worn.
I thought maybe that's what you were hearing.

Mark........dinna worry.......unless yer a sphincterly challenged originality expert there will be "mission creep" in yer future. That grinding is yer clutch throw out bearing. It will last fer LONG TIME as long as you don't ride yer clutch pedal........Dell

Dell,a throw out bearing doesn't make noise when the clutch petal is released, unless there is no free travel in the clutch petal, and not make any noise when the clutch is depressed. His noise in when the petal is released.
