Old starter

Hi,
I just replaced my old starter that would no longer start my 9/2/8N with a 12V one from our host. What to do with the old one? I hate to toss old parts in the trash. It still works, but the little gear has several broken teeth and moves freely on the shaft. I couldn't wait to get it repaired.

ChadC,Hang on to it for a spare,Made in USA starters are getting hard to find.Get a new style bendix drive and repair it check the brushes and bushings for worn parts.

Did you take it to a rebuild shop to have it
checked out? If you didn't, someone around
here will be glad to buy it for the price of
postage. That's because there is probably
nothing wrong with the starter that a new
$20 bendix won't fix.

forgot to ask...
Can any starter shop fix these? Or is there a recommended source to use with folks who know these starters specifically?

Any GOOD starter shop can fix them.
The local fellow here fixes starters from about anything.
Lawn mowers to new cars and heavy equipment.
Generators and alternators too.
You might ask your local NAPA if they have a recommendation.

thank you Royse....I appreciate it! I do have to say with your great carb job and the new 12V starter, she fires right up with no hesitation or anything. What a difference from her tired old starter.

I was in my Napa store today and I asked them about rebuilding starters. They did not know of anyone local but they said they will send a starter out to have it rebuilt. They said it usually takes only about two days to get it back.
