Removing the head on a 8n ford

I have decided to look into this oil smoking problem. I have loosened all head bolts, removed the coil in front and the oil filter bracket on the left side. It doesn't want to move. Is there dowel pins in the head or something that would cause it not to come loose. Anyone have a trick to free it up. thanks norm

As Bruce says or is you do not mind making a bit of a mess put the plugs in after filling the cylinder with ATF or oil etc. Then spin it over the the fluid in the cylinders will pop the head right off

Pinball,You said,The fellow I got it from said his dad did a complete overhaul on it and when parked it didn't smoke at all.

I don't doubt it at all, that it Didn't Smoke When It Was Parked! (most don't unless on fire)
Did you even think about soaking the ring like everyone told you?,if so it has been not enough time yet.
Does it have head bolts or studs and nuts holding the head down?
With the bolts or nuts loose, put the plugs back in tight and hit the starter to loosen the head.
If that don't loosen it up remove #1 plug and feed a rope like a nylon starter rope into the hole to the left side and hit the starter again.

I will try that tomorrow. I have the 3 rows of bolts out, oil bracket off, coil bracket off. is there anything else I might of missed. norm

Double check that you have all the head bolts out. Don't remember how many there are so can not tell you how many to look for.

I soaked it 3 different times with atf. Smokes a lot worse since I did that. No 1 plug was extremely oily. no 2 had a little. 3/4 all looked good. I do feel like theres a bad ring on no 1. Used quart of oil in about 30 minutes running. What concerns me is if I get the head off and I find deep groves in the wall to where I have to replace the cylinders. I probably wont use this tractor 2/3 hours a year just mowing the pond dams so it wont get any hard use. until I get in there I wont know what all I have to do. Thanks norm

A quart in 30 minutes!! That's a lot of oil!!

Would you believe this one didn't burn a quart in a year?
I didn't use it much, maybe 10 hours or so and that was light
work, but it didn't burn a quart of oil in that time.

An ATF soak actually cured this one, but not until I soaked it and
then worked the snot out of it with the plow. I was amazed.

I know it won't work in all cases and it sure won't cure broken
rings. This one had sat for years so I soaked it before I started
it hoping not to break any of the rings when I did fire it up.

If you have not done it yet, go to Tractor Supply and buy the manual. It shows the number and location of all the head bolts and torque procedure for re-installation. It is cheap and very handy. You can buy it here as well.
