over running coupler help

I am new to owning a tractor and having fun. I am currently using a brush hog without the over running coupler. When i purchsed one from TSC it will not go on far enough to line up the holes for the pin to go through. It is almost as if the pto shaft coming out of the back of the 8N is short. when you put the coupler on as far as it can go it is just an 1/8 th inch short.
Any one else have this problem or am i the only one? [/b]

Check and make sure you do not have a lot of in and out play in the PTO shaft it may need to be pulled and have snap rings etc repaired

When I first tried to put one on my 8N I had the same problem. I pulled it of and took a file and cleaned up the splines on the pto shaft and it finally slid on all the way. Doesn't take much for it to bind up.

Thank you for the reply. I am no mechanic only a little dangerous with a wrench on weekend. That is one of the things i checked i tugged on the pto shaft and it appeared to be solid and did not have a lot of "play". Unfortunately my 8n is stored at my hunting land and i can only get there on weekends so it is difficult to have the time to trouble shoot these things. I am looking into the type of over running coupler that is a quick attach with a push button spring. It looks like they have a shorter distance to attach it to the shaft. Not sure what else to do. this weekend i am going to look at it again and measure the distance from the housing to the hole in the shaft.

Thank you Caryc. To be clear the over running coupler goes on all the way on the PTO shaft. the housing on the couple is flush with the back of the tractor pto shaft. There is no more space for it to slide on farther. Is it possible that somewhere along the way in the life of this tractor that some one installed the pto shaft too short or incorrectly?

Looking now for a shorter couple like the snap on type in stead of the pin type they appear to have a shorter profile.

You didn't say what size your PTO shaft is. The older ones were 1 1/8" and the newer ones are 1 3/8". If yours is 1 1/8", don't bother looking for a push button ORC. They don't make them for the 1 1/8" shafts.

About a year or so ago I found this link on the Agri Supply website.

[utl]http://www.agrisupply.com/over-run-clutch-spline-to-spline/p/32439/[/url]

It's a push button ORC for a 1 1/8" PTO. I called and talked to one of their techs and asked him to verify that it fit the 1 1/8" PTO shaft. He checked and said the web ad was a mistake and it did not fit the 1 1/8" PTO shaft.

Evidently they never corrected the ad. I just called and got some lady and she said it was for the 1 1/8" shaft but all she was doing was looking at the ad in her computer. I asked to speak to one of the techs but they were not available right now, so I left her my phone number and she said she would check into it and call me back.

You would think that if that ad had been running for a year that they would have had a lot of ORC's returned because they didn't fit the smaller shaft. It's funny that no one has changed the ad.

I screwed up when typing the url in the above message and since this site won't let on edit, here it is again.

Pretty sure I had a push-button 1-1/8" ORC once but it wouldn't fit in far enough to latch so I returned it. When I switched over my 8n to 1-3/8" I got a 1-3/8" push-
button ORC to got with it which I have been very happy with - almost worth replacing the shaft just to be able to use the push-button ORC instead of those nasty ones
with the rollpin. The 1-3/8 push buttons have a longer shaft, which is why they can work with a push-button.

Anyone new to ORCs should be sure to get some instructions for them since the made-in-India gold ORCs everyone sells usually don't come with them. There's a sheet
from Hub City that turns up here occasionally and I think is archive at the other site. ORCs are very high maintenance, must be greased daily and occasionally stripped
and cleaned inside.

yle, that sheet my be my legacy. :) I had that in an old tractor folder since about 1970 & scanned it and posted it a few years back & it has been wide spread since then. I can always spot it by the dog-eared corner.
