Thanks to all the fellows that replied to my request for help with this carburator. I took some more time and followed the suggestions for the idle and fuel adjustments a little more closely and it is quite a bit better than it was before. I will probably go ahead and change out the spark plug wires and put in another new set of points. The set I just put in (from NAPA) has a plastic wear tang and is already showing signs of pitting on the contacts.

If they're pitting already you might need a new condenser too.
NAPA will likely have one along with the premium points.
They do for Fords at least.

Thanks for the reply. That is good information. I have looked through these forums a number of times trying to get a better understanding of how to check the condition of the condenser. I figured they either worked or didn't work, is there any tests that can be done on them easily to confirm if they are ok. If you just keep swapping them how do you know when you have a good one. Are there other symptoms besides premature pitting of the points

There's not a good way to check condensers with common tools.
On top of that, they don't fail all that often.
When they do fail, they tend to short or open.
If they short you will get no spark at all.
If they open, you'll get pitted points in a short period of time.

If you replace it, keep your old one for a while and compare the
amount of pitting you have now with the pitting after a similar
amount of run time on the replacement. No pitting with a new
one or significantly less, then pitch the old one.

Thanks for the information Royse, I see this site sells an EI module for this tractor for $78.00. I might have to consider that if I keep going through points.

Points should last for some time, If you are getting a transfer of material from one to the other the condenser is bad, that is it purpose, keep that from happening.
Years ago they came as a set, points and condensor, not so now.

I would not install the EI unless I had good working points system.
You may be trading one problem for another.

hey arc! All the time the engine is running. They will not look new even after a couple of minutes. Do you know bad from normal?

EI would eliminate points issues... Maybe in another 40 years when EI has been around for 80 years folks want be so skeered of it...

Thanks for the reply, What would you consider to be normal arcing. These points possibly have 1 hour, at the most, on them and have an approximately 1/16 in. arc burn on them. Is that bad or normal.
