Starter Removal

In Bruce Haynes? venerable ?75 Tips?, # 36 is,

"If you need to remove the starter, always remember to have two nuts to place on the two long starter bolts as soon as you loosen them from the block. If you forget and the armature comes out of the starter housing, you will learn how to hold the spring-loaded brushes back with toothpicks while you put the armature back in the housing."

I need to do this (remove my starter), but don?t quite understand. Is he saying to put the nuts on the bolts before removing the starter from the tractor? Seems like you?d have to remove it in order to put the nuts on the bolts...

Move the 3 pieces that make up the shell of the starter away from the flywheel housing as a unit an inch, more or less, then install a 5/16" NC nut on the exposed threads on at least one of the long bolts that hold the starter together before continuing to remove the starter, so as not to separate either endbell from the starter "belly" (which can allow the spring-loaded brushes to drop out of place).

Dirt what Bruce and bob said. If it does come apart don't fret, just post back for tips to put it together.
