Weeping Diff Mystery Solved

Well . . . with the Drawbar and Check Chain bracket removed I drained off some lube and then did as suggested and poked around in the holes.

All had good thread the full length and all felt the same where the holes bottomed out; in fact, it felt peculiar like some kind of packing so I left well enough alone. I cleaned out the holes with laquer thinner and used sealant on the bolts.

Here's the interesting part. when I went to introduce the gear oil I drained off, I pulled out the level plug and lo and behold it started running out when I still had the better part of a quart left.

The level plug's bottom edge is lower than the top bracket bolt that has been weeping gear lube . . . so . . . being over full was causing the leakage I think.

My underbelly drawbar mount was a mess of gear lube as well
and so I took it off to clean and restored it as the keeper pin holes were worn right to the edge. I welded a thick flat washer to the collar and all is well.

Cheers,
T

Aren't there three compartments in the trans/diffy. Maybe you have one compartment not full. Better check again after running for a
bit?

Hi Roger,

It's a Jubilee with three separate compartments -- gear lube in the tranny & Diff and Hyd Oil in between.

Oh, are you suggesting leakage between Hydraulic reservoir and differential? I'll check that out.

It smelled and looks like straight gear oil though.

Thanks,
Terry
