The original subject was "Re: removing countershaft".

Dan, have you removed the countershaft from your transmission? I have the same tractor with the Sherman in it. I have the same problem as you with removing the countershaft. As far as I can tell it doesn't come out the back of the trans like the main shaft does . I'm trying to come out the top and it hits the out put shaft. Appears like I'll have to remove the engine to access the Sherman and remove it to get the counter shaft out the top. The bearing and gear is pressed on the shaft and cannot be removed inside the transmission. I'm a little late I know getting in on this but I'm new to this forum. I would like to hear where your at on your tractor for any tips you may have. Thanks

Well, the good news is I fixed it...problem is I don't remember how I fixed it. I do remember fighting that thing and am pretty sure it eventually came out the top, but how I got to that point is unclear. That tractor is gone but I have a parts tranny out there I can take apart, maybe that will jog my memory...give me a day so and I'll see what I can come up with. Dan

Dan, thanks for the reply. Don't go to too much trouble. I'm almost sure I've got it figured out. I haven't had much time to work on it this week but will get on it Friday. I believe I'll have to pull engine and the Sherman with the out put shaft to bring it out the top. The bearing and gear on the countershaft will not slide off as it says in the book. It appears like it's a pressed on fit. Sounds like you had the same issue I have. Broke 1st gear and counter shaft gear. If your memory comes back on it any advice will be appreciated. Thanks again Greg

Yes I have the FO-4 manual and it was working real
good for me until I couldn't get the bearing and the
gear off countershaft. The Manuel says it slides off
and shaft comes out the back of the transmission.
But it's not sliding off too good for me so far. I'm
thinking it's a pressed on bearing and gear. The
donor transmission I have with a good shaft came
out the top but it doesn't have a Sherman in it and
the out put shaft came out easily to make room to
come out the top. So I was thinking that's what I
need to do. Thanks for the reply

What it does say is" is removed from the rear after the main shaft is removed.

To remove the main shaft it says to remove the trans from the tractor.

the ones I have done, I had the trans removed totally from the tractor.
Good Luck!
