GB........I'm with Bruce, my MPC sez 8-32x3/16. CAUTION: most hardware stores sell 8-32x1/4 pan head screws. Iff'n yer really sphincterly challenged, you kenn gitt a real 8-3/16 from yer local Ford Automobile parts counter.....HEH, Dell

(quoted from post at 18:51:31 10/06/15) Interesting.......

My MPC says p/n 355047-S is a 8-32 x .19"

Probably changed the screw size at some point.

lways good to have an option! :)

So do I get both and wing it or is the 8-32 correct. No problem as for how long it is easy to shorten on and my wing stripper is set up to do that

Rich;
Here's hoping my screw sizing, didn't cause ya any real problems!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My finger didn't follow my eyes, and I gave you a size for a 'NO longer serviced screw'!!!
Leads to false info.!!

Glad the other guys caught that, and gave you the RIGHT sizing!!

AND, YES.........my memory has gone to crud![/i:5aa4084b50][/b:5aa4084b50]

ot to worry Gary.....anyone with any kind of experience ought to be able to tell the difference & figure it out without the internet!

No problem. I do not do many front mounts so hard to remember what size i need. I tend to do my best to stay away from them. But when some one jumps on another for a simple mistake well that is just flat out wrong since only one never makes a mistake and he is dead or is he alive??

HiYa Old-
If you have a 0-1" mic or set of dial calipers, you can measure the OD of the screw and find the screw size on a chart. If not, then take the old screw with you to a Fastenal or industrial supply house and they can measure/match it up. If length is too long, be sure to check that it won't impede the function and cause interference with something below where it screws in. If it is too long, get a same thread nut and screw it on the screw. Hold the screw with channel locks and grind down the end til it is the length you want. Grind or file around the end to create a small chamfer. Then you unscrew the nut to help break that last little burr of the end and make it so it will thread in easily.

Well the local Ford dealer parts dept had 8-32X1/4 and no 8-32X3/16. So what would happen if one used a 8-32X14 and put a lock washer under the head??

hy the critical aspect of the short length? Answer: don't want screws to protrude through the breaker plate & contact the rotating centrifugal advance mechanism. Always think to ask yourself "why". Soooo...if you washer it up to prevent the protrusion you will probably be OK.

OLD.........used to have the Ford p/n fer the 8/32-3/16 screw. I remember haffin' to ARGUE with the Ford counter man before he'd suddenly find the desired 8-32x1/16 binder head screw. It's gotta be SHORT or it will catch the centrifugal advance weights under the points plate. And an extra washer under the head gitts caught with the insulated points rubbing block. .........HTH, Dell

I had this same question just a few months back. I don't remember who posted this answer but this is the one I saved for next time I work on the distributor.

If they aren't an orderable item from the tractor parts places, here are some choices from McMaster Carr:

Either
slotted stainless steel 8-32 x 3/16" ---> 91794A189 $9.99 per 100 (fillister "tall" head)
or
slotted zinc over steel 8-32 x 1/4" ---> 90280A190 $4.32/100 (fillister)
with
lock washer zinc 91113A009 $2.59/100

Or,

philips w/built-in lock washer 8-32 x 1/4" ---> 90403A190 (zinc, $6/100) or 95345A063 ("Sems screw" stainless, $13/100)

Or,

binding head slotted. 8-32 x 3/16" stainless 91793A189 $5.86/100 with above lock washer

With the 1/4" long options, you might have to grind a bit off the length to make sure they don't collide with the weights. The parts manual calls for .19" long, and the 3/16" screws are .185", so they ought to work as is. Parts manual part # is 355047-S on page 149.

I did get lucky when I went and looked it the 8N today. Still has good spark but the yellow gas that came out of the carb makes me think carb problems. I could get it to run once in a while but not for long. Have the carb sitting in the soap right now and will finish the rebuilt tomorrow and see if that is where the problem is. But yes understand why the screws have to be short so they do not mess with other parts
