Packing oil pump with grease

I've read a lot of comments about packing an oil pump with a light grease to help it prime on the first start up. I've got a can of dark, lithium EP grease.

Would you guys consider that "light" grease or does it really matter? Pros or cons?

A lite coat of most any grease will work you don't have to pack it full...

Assembly lube/grease would be the better choice...

Go easy with the grease. You only need to coat the gears with enough to form a seal to help prime the pump. If you put too much you could actually interfere with the priming of the pump.

After posting my post I read your link. It looks like it would be a good choice as it does dissipates into the oil too. Guess they sell that at
the parts house? Wouldn't want a whole case.

You should be able to pick up a tube local....

Thanks for the responses. I was planning to pressurize the oil system with a power drill before starting also. Will the grease hurt anything doing that?

I guess you are going to use some kind of drill driven pump and motor oil, then no problem...

How does this work?

the NAA has a slotted oil pumP drive. You chuck up a large, slotted screwdriver or the shaft out of an old distributor and spin the pump with a drill. Theory is that it prime the pump and pre-oils everything.

Our local O'Reillys has a tool they rent.

If you have a side mount I don't think you need grease in the pump at all. Just prime it by spinning it and you'll have more oil all threw
the engine at the time you first turn it over than the rest of the times when you are starting it cold. It will pick it up. But still a little
grease wont hurt. Just don't use a grease that will start gunking up the insides from first start.
