Engine re-build

Have torn apart engine and all is cleaned. How do I stop the engine and parts from rusting? Should I use oil or WD40 and can i use this on
the surfaces were the gaskets will go?
Also what is the best way of cleaning inside the water passages?

I would use ordinary oil of it's not going to sit too long as rust preventer. WD is too thin and runs off.
Best way to clean water jacket would be to take the frost plugs out and flush . Perhaps rattling around in there with a stiff wire. That of course will require new frost plugs.

Wayne.........WD-40 is NOT anti-rustproofing. Its WaterDisplacement-40th formula. Use enny oil of yer choosing. Me? I'd probably use vasoline or chassis grease. Just rubber on with yer fingers. Simple, eh? As fer yer water passages, un-bend a clothes hanger and probe, then squirt'em with water. Again, simple, eh? .........respectfully, Dell

I use STP oil treatment for stuff like that. I have an engine block sitting here in my office that has been here for 3-5 years and I coated every thing with STP and it has yet top show any signs of rust. This is a custom rebuild that got stopped due to my son being booted out of the Navy due to Military down sizing. 292 Chev bored 60 over with a 204/208 cam etc etc.

The easiest way that I know of to temporarily prevent engine parts from corrosion is to simply spray everything with WD40.

Yes, you can spray it on mating gasket surfaces.

As long as it is only going to sit a relatively short period of time I use WD-40. It prevents short term rust (few months) and it is easy to clean off for paint. When ready, I clean it off with naptha and then I paint it.

Take the engine block to a machine shop and have it hot tanked or baked. It is not expensive and far more effective than anything you can do yourself.

I wouldn't spray WD on anything because it has no oxidative stability so it turns gummy within months and doesn't cut rust worth a damn. The reason Amsoil MP is called "Metal Protector" is because it does just THAT. It protects metal from rusting and NEVER GETS GUMMY!

I think that it is exactly what you are looking for.

Here's a sample of Amsoil's rust dissolving capability
