Oil filler cap

I just got a new oil filler cap for my 1940 9N -- this one:http://www.yesterdaystractors.com/3...ent_6290.htm?gclid=CNmSp_Cp1scCFQ2OaQodtk8Gjw
Though it's listed in the ad as working for the 9N, I've since learned in an archived post to this forum that it's an 8N cap. Now, it fits, but loosely. I'm trying to decide whether to spend the extra to get the cap that reflects the OEM part# (about $25 more) or do something to improve the fit of this one -- perhaps spread or flare the end of the tube on the filler cap slightly?
I'm undecided on whether to use what I have and save the money or just go ahead and get the repro cap, not knowing whether that would actually fit better.[/url]

It looks just like the4 one I bought from Steiner. It has the replaceable paper cartridge in it. Mine also fit loosely on my 8N. I just spread the two flanges on the fcap out a little and it fit nice and tight. I never gave it a second thought after that. No problem.

I'd be inclined to find just the right thin-walled short sleeve to fit down inside the breather pipe that your cap will fit into -- but put a shoulder on the top end of the sleeve.

you might have to cut the sleeve lengthwise so you can crush it a little for a perfect fit in then maybe braze the seam.

But like you said, a muffler shop would probably expand your cap pipe for free.

It''s not a full 360 degree pipe on the cap. It's two flanges that fit into the breather tube. As I said, I just spread out those two flanges a little to make it fit tight into the breather tube. If I remember right, it also has a flat rubber gasket on the cap that goes against the top of the breather tube for a tight fit.

I posted another answer above but for some reason I can only see it in classic view. So, I wonder if this one will show up?

For people that may not see my previous post either, That looks exactly like the one I purchased from Steiner. It uses replaceable paper cartridges in it.

Here are a couple pics of mine, Is it the same one you have? I was wrong about the gasket. It's felt, not rubber. You can see the black ring where it seats on top of the breather tube. Wrong about the filter also, it's foam not paper.

Yes, that's the one. Looks like my notion of flaring the end of the tube to snug it up is the way to go, for now.

I'll probably eventually put the original type cap on it, just because I like things that way. Right now, the tractor is red underneath like an 8N, even though it should be all
grey. But it's purty that way, so I'm not too worried about that, either!

Thanks for the replies, folks. I just didn't want to alter the thing and then find out later that I would have been better off to exchange it.

HiYa Dan-
The newer caps as you show do fit a little loosely. You can get new, exact-as-original caps that Dennis Carpenter repops at nnalert -see link below. These fit nice and snug. ALL N's used this cap so don't be fooled by what is 9N, 2N, or 8N. Hope this helps...

I "had" the same fill cap on my '51. Trailered home from my place in CO. two weekends ago and while unloading noticed I bounced the cap off somewhere along the way. I'll be looking for one that fits better this this time.
