Proper Use of Brush Hog

I posted a question regarding servicing my brush hog Thankyou for your help. My question now is when your using the mower should you disengage the pto if need to shift into reverse for whatever reason. I can see stoping the pto if you it an object and rising the deck too of course. The tractor has the clutch on the pto as well as a clutch down towards the gear box on the mower. Any advice will be great I've never used on of these machines and do not want to tear it up or worse they're handy but are dangerous at the same time must give them respect. Hope my question here makes sense and doesn't sound unclear or stupid.

PTO only turns in one direction. You can cut in forward or reverse. I disconnect the shaft to drive around so I can raise the cutter for traveling without the blades turning. Others may chime in about connecting the shaft with the motor running. I usually shut it off as a safety measure then connect the shaft but as long as the PTO is off you could connect the shaft with the tractor running. Out in the middle of a field by yourself is no place to have an accident with a piece of farm equipment. Use a rubber strap to secure the shaft when not in use.

Home Machinist, Get a over running clutch and use it with your brush hog.For your own safety and protection for the tractor!

No need to disengage the PTO - just back up. The only issue with the N-series is that you can't raise the implement when you have the clutch depressed - no hydraulic power.

If you're going to work on your bush hog, shut the tractor off first. No sense in taking an unnecessary risk.

And NEVER go near a PTO shaft while it is turning. Those things can pull an arm off.

Many newer lawn and garden tractors have a safety switch to prevent mowing in reverse. Most farm tractors don't. It doesn't bother your tractor a bit to use the pto while in reverse. It makes mowing a lot of areas easier, except for neck pain from looking over your shoulder! I'll sometimes back into heavy stuff with the hog lifted up a bit, and the lower it as I pull back out in first gear.
