Axel Lock Ring

Can someone explain the axle lock rings. My tractor was missing one so I bought a pair. The nuts that thread onto the axel noticed have holes around it in the grove also noticed the axle has two machines slots/groves 180 degrees apart. Does one of the drilled holes in the nut line up with one of the slots and the locking ring tang goes trough the hole then into the slot locking the nut to the axle much like a woodruff key would do when the two slots align so the key slips in.

Yes. In theory the nut can't back off because the tip of that circlip is stuck in the axle groove.

I don't trust the new ones. I don't think they are very stout spring-wise. I put them on and then cinch a zip tie around them to hold them in against the axle. Get them all the way right and they never move.

Re: Axle Lock ring/nuts. I have noticed that people have a tendency to paint over the axle lock nuts. Heavy coats of paint then obscure the lock rings and keep them from acting as the spring that they are. If one unscrews the lock nut without lifting the lock ring from its notch, it will shear off the tip of the ring requiring replacement when the nut is re-installed. I have observed such a condition on my 8N. I had to replace one lock nut and ring with new and have observed that the other side is so covered with paint that if I wished to remove it from the axle, I would likely have to use paint remover to free the ring before any removeal of the ring was possible and unscrewing was done least I snap the ring tip off.
