1958 Ford 861 Power master. Started engine for approx a minute or two to bleed hydraulic pump. Starter button stuck on while tractor was running. The starter isn't engaging now. New battery, just replaced solenoid. I also tried to jump start. Solenoid is just clicking not engaging starter. I guess I just wanna hear the bad news from someone else and where could i find a starter for this tractor or is it hard to rebuild? Thanks for any input.

Good chance you let the smoke out of the starter and will need to replace it. But before you do that try this. Take a jumper cable and run it form the battery ignition to the starter stud. Touche it to the starter stud and see if the starter spins over. BE sure it is OUT OF GEAR when you do that. If it spins over you have a bad solenoid or battery cable. If it does not spin over and just sparks you have smoked the starter and need a new one which you can get from this site or a NH dealer

Before you say "new starter" check your area for a competent re-builder. I paid about $25 for a complete restoration of my last failing starter ( on an 871 ) and I would bet serious money that the OEM rebuilt by a reputable local guy beats the stuffin's out of a purchase from an unknown rebuild shop.

Your money - your choice - but I know I would invest time in local ads over time looking for the best internet deal.

before I turned a single bolt, I'd bypass test the relay.

starter may be fine and the relay may have a bad contact.

the starter spinning under no load for a minute or 2 for sure heated it up.. but might not have kileld it unless it was already dieing... it should have been frespinning with the drive not engaged.

I'd also find out why the switch stuck.. was it the thumb switch mechanically sticking down, or did it short internally, or the wire to relay short to frame? fix that first / as well.
