crap...what to check?

long story short i let a friend borrow my 41' 9n and post hole digger to put some fence post in. I found out tonight that he popped the radiator while taking it 3 miles down the road to the carry-out for some beer lol. it drowned out the distributer so I'm confident he didn't run it without water... question being aside from replacing the radiator and thermostat, what else should i look at? any common problems that cause the radiator to pop?

A new friend. Did the radiator or hose pop? If it's the radiator, repair or replace depending on condition. Dry out the distributor and you should be in good shape.

it's the core that's leaking... and definitely a new one is cheaper. flea-bay has a radiator, pads, cap and hoses for $145 free shipping.

pressure tanks take pressure caps, non pressure tanks take non pressure caps.

they are both different in make and look.

pressure tanks and caps are what are sold today..

if you don't already have gaskets for the dizzy, get them. can clean the cap out with wd4 then brake cleaner, then gasket and go.

....and furthermore, I might add, that you can't mix them up. Can't be done, as the mechanics of cap/neck will not allow a pressure cap to fit on a non-pressure radiator or visa versa.

yup.. inny vs outty tabs or ears for locking.

I really can't fathom where some of the users come up with these ideas...

It has been my experience that the new radiators don't fit very well! While it may be cheaper, you may not be happy with it.

You're exactly right. I bought a new radiator from Kumar Bros. off e-bay and the bottom bolt holes did not line up, the radiator fan hit the bottom inlet, and my fan shroud had to be altered. Also the filler neck was too short. Not a good experience for a product advertised as being for an 8N.

Together we could make one good one - I have an after market radiator with a neck that's 10 miles too long. It sticks so far above the hood I worry about it hooking on things. It does hold water, though. I'm not loaning it to any "friends" either. If anyone wants to use a tractor they get a free operator with it - me!

"It is much cheaper to buy a new radiator than to send one to the radiator shop."

Sometimes. My local guy here repairs my N radiators for $60.
For that I get my original radiator back cleaned/rodded, repaired,
tested and repainted but NOT re-cored.
If he has to re-core one, new is cheaper.
Shop around you may find a good deal out there.

the busted radiator in is is an aftermarket that doesn't fit well to start with.. so i have no desire to have it repaired or re-cored. what's everyone's opinions on t-stats? I see both a 160 and a 180 degree out there.

About 10 years ago I purchased a used aftermarket, and it would not fit correctly, so I purchased a new aftermarket from a supposed reputable supplier on the Internet, and both were junk (my opinion, and
neither fit correctly, and I ended up punching a hole in the core trying to get the shroud to fit a new radiator). Dug out the leaking original, found it was not difficult to repair and it has been on ever
since. My opinion, I would pay more to repair an original than I would pay for new aftermarket since I have yet to find one that fit like the original. I wish I had called and asked to return the new one
vs. trying to make it fit, as after it was damaged, it is doubtful the supplier would take the return even though it was defective to start with. If I recall that new one was around $200, they told me the
radiator was good quality and fit prior to purchasing, and I just looked at their web site, and they list at $210 today.....for that kind of $$ I would expect OE fit.
