push button starter

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e378/laru9779/Tractor%20Wiring%20Diagrams/WIRE-12-51-1w.jpg

this is the schematic that i am using from my ford tractors site, i have the coil from napa that does not need resistor, i can turn the tractor over by using a screwdriver from push button stud to battery stud but push button does not work, the stud on the solenoid for the push button wire was very loose when i took nut off of stud but firmed up when tightening down. will i need to take tranny cover off to investigate push button starter? also how would i check continuity?

dave

if i press starter button and check continuity it looks good, maybe my solenoid is incorrect for the schematic 12v one wire alt.? is says 6v made in china

any thoughts?

thanks dave

bentwrench solved the problem, 6v solenoid was on backwards for 12v system, starter button post needed to be on engine side, sometimes you look at a problem so long you over look the obvious

thanks bentwrench

6v or 12v don't matter.

one one side of that is hooekd to battery, so you have to make sure the coil in the relay is hooked to battery and ground via the push button. polarity irrelevant to that issue..
