2N doesn't start

I have a 38 2N. Last fall, I broke the front axle center cross bar. Tractor was running then. While attempting to take the gas tank off alone, I dropped the tank assembly on the back of the amp gauge.

I've replaced the cross bar, reassembled the front end, replaced the amp gauge and the melted wires, replaced the plugs and points.

The tractor doesn't start. It turns over, gets gas down to the carborator, but doesn't sound like it's firing. Any ideas?

Thanks

Jhill..........awe yes, the infamous carborator, (carburetor) Based upon yer description of DROPPING the tank on the ammeter, I'd make a WAG (wild A$$ guess) that you BROKE the more infamous ballast resistor just below the ammeter. With a broken ballast resistor, you will NEVER gitt enny sparkies. ........sparkie-meister Dell

Check for spark at the plugs.
If there is none, check for power to the coil.
No power, move back toward the resistor and switch.
If you already have power to the coil, what is the voltage?
It should be battery voltage when the points are open and
"about" half of that when they close as you roll it over.
If it doesn't go down, points aren't making contact correctly.
If it remains around half they aren't opening or something is
grounding them inside the distributor. Commonly the little
copper strap or the screws that connect it.

This isn't a complete list, just some places to start checking.

No such thing as a 1938 2N they where not made till 1942. Shoot even the 9N did not come out till 1939.
That said simple trouble shooting.
#1 check that you have a good blue white spark at all 4 plug wires and that it jumps a 1/4 inch gap or more.
#2 pull the carb drain plug and check for a good steady flow of gas. Should fill a pint jar in about 3 minutes. Catch it to look for dirt/water etc.
#3 you might want to try a hot wire. Go from the ignition side of the battery to the coil and see if it starts up. If it does then you have a problem from the coil back to the battery. If you still have no spark then you have a problem inside the distributor
