adjusting valves on 2n

I was rebuilding a 2n engine today and ran into something I had heard about, but had never seen or tried before. The person who had rebuilt this engine before had drilled a 1/8" hole in the wall of the valve lifter chambers. All I had to do was stick a welding rod in the hole and it would go into one of the grooves in the lifter and kept it from rotating. It sure made adjusting the valves easier, didn't have to mess with those clips.

I will take the time to drill them in the future. It will make my job easier and the next guy also. I assume that all of the adjustable lifters have the grooves on the side, all of the ones I have worked on have them.

Before someone points it out, I realize some of the springs in the photo are upside down, not that I think it really makes much difference. I put them back on correctly.

If you lifters are new then no farther machine work is needed...

Once I know piston fit and the ring fit is correct I install the cam and valves first... I probably recheck valve lash 4/5 times thru the build. You get to spin the engine quite a few times installing the pistons and checking cam timing... I have found the valve lash may change on a few valves...

I don't like fresh paint inside a engine its a sign of sloppy arse work... You can pull the trigger on a build after its button up to get yer jolly's off...

Well you learn something new... I just did one of these, wish I had known about the hole trick. i Only had 1 good locking tool, so had a fight with the other 4. Thanks guys.
