sherman transmission

Look at the shifter handle.

Steel rod with aluminum ball: Almost certainly step up.

One piece cast steel: Almost certainly combination.

J or dogleg handle combo or creeper(rare)
Straight handle step up or step down (not common)

If it is a combo is has 3 speeds. Over drive, under drive and the standard gears. To tell move the shifter to neutral and then pull out side ways on it. If it comes out about a 1/2 inch then pull up on it. If it goes up then you are now in the gears the tractor came with and that is where you want to be for brush hogging and any PTO work since the Sherman speeds up and slows down the PTO in any thing but the standard range which means unless your in the standard range the PTO will spin to fast ore to slow

definitely the top picture, just got the tractor running took it for a spin, was able to get 2 levels of four gears(lever forward and lever back towards driver), tried to find the in between(normal gear) then pull it towards me however no luck, still studying it.

thanks for the feedback

When the Sherman is in the center position as in neutral pull it out side ways as in to the left. It maybe hard to move if the owner before you had not known about to doing the out to the side thing. I had my 841 for a couple years before I found the standard gears. You may have to stand on the left side and pull pretty hard to get it to pull out to the side
