Odd Starter problem.

I just put my tractor back together, after painting it, and started it up. All seemed well but after I revved it up to about 1800 rpm, I heard a mechanical click sound and dropped it back to idle and turned it off (at key) and the starter was spinning, but not engaged. I hit the starter button and it quit. It happened 3 more times, My voltage regulator is not working (see post below), could it be related to the voltage regulator.

6v or 12v?

It's not related to the v/r. Different
circuit. Sounds like you wired it wrong and
the starter engaged. And likely busted the
Bendix.

It still cranks and starts ok, I think the bendix is ok, but I will double check the wiring. It only seems to do it if i rev it up to full throttle. Thanks Bruce

he Bendix is not backing off when you start it an you are only notice the problem when you rev it up. I would say you need a new Bendix.

I think the contacts in your solenoid are sticking. Try tapping it lightly with the handle of a screw driver.

Thanks guys, I will check it out tomorrow, and let you know. We had people over here tonight.

Could be a few things. Started button sticking down or solenoid is sticking or if a 9N the starter switch is sticking

I'm with Old,
simple first
pull that starter button up when it fires.
especially on a freshly painted tractor.

old tractors...'push button' switches are a, in name only, kind of thing.
after ya push em, don't just let off em. Give them a yank back out/up.

UPDATE
The wiring was incorrect at the regulator. I had the BAT and ARM wires crossed. I have a different regulator on it now and it is charging and the starter has not spun again. I think I will take the starter off and check the bendix just to be sure. Thanks for the help although I still don't understand why the regulator being wired wrong would cause the starter to spin.
I do apologize I should have started the post out saying it was a 1950 8N sidemount .
I don't think the starter push button was sticking because I did not paint it. It is new and the solenoid is new also, the original Ford style (tin can type) BUT both are from the land of almost right I am sure...

I don't believe it did. I think your solenoid was stuck as HCooke said.
Could have also been the push button or the wire going to it grounded.
Glad you got it working but keep and eye on it. It could happen again.

Here is where it is at as of now. Starting to work on the rims and pricing tires and then on to the sheetmetal
I have one good hat rim and I am trying to make another one out of two that are in poor condition.

I will keep an eye on it. I am going to pull the starter to see if bendix is bad as some have suggested. The starter button has not been stuck down unless it sticks down internally, It hasn't done it again for me to try tapping on the selonoid.

I had that problem with a log splitter. The kill switch was activated by a push button - and it stayed in. Invested a lot of time horsing around before the discovery.
