9N governor and tach

can someone tell me what governor I need to order to put on my 9n so I can put the cable drive tach on it. I ordered a new one a while back and it had the cap on the back so I thought I could put connect the tach cable to it but the governor shaft must be wrong as there is no way to drive the tach cable. the other problem is that the new governor I bought doesn't do a thing and I've had it apart a couple times and cannot figure out why. thank you

You would need to use a hybrid of an late 8N governor housing and shaft with 9N levers, is that what you had?

Is that what you have? Also, (IIRC) there's a slotted sleeve or roll pin in the end of the governor shaft that engages with the tach cable.

Whut Bob said... the guts of the gov are basically the same other than until the proof meter set up came along there were no provisions to drive a cable... I have seen shafts on early N's that were drilled to accept a drive pin (basically a roll pin drove into the end of the gov shaft that has been drilled/bored out) but did not have the bushing to drive the cable...

You may be missing the cable drive pin...

the new governor i bought looked identical to the old one except the old one didn't have the cap on the back where the tach cable would connect. the levers looked the same and everything connected the same. and like i said before, the other problem is that the new governor doesn't work at all. the tractor acts like it doesn't even have a governor on it. i've had it apart a couple times and it is so simple but i can't figure out why it doesn't work other then it is so tight that it seems that it couldn't work. i am willing to buy a new governor and tach set up to do what i need if i knew what that would be.
thanks for all the info

Are you could google "how does the governor on a ford tractor work'

Lots of hits...
that is very interesting, never knew any of that. so I took my governor apart again, cannot see a think wrong with it except the spring seems way too tight where the balls can't even move the lever. so now I'm wondering if I have the wrong levers. does a 9n have just two levers cause this one has one outer lever that goes to the throttle plate in the carb, and the inner one has two. one that the spring is hooked to and the other part goes to the throttle control. about to pull the last bit of hair out that I have. thanks for your help.
