My early 8n starts using a small Craftsman riding mower battery. Any harm in using that battery rather than a larger one?

Is your tractor 6 or 12 volts.
If 12 wont hurt it at all.
If 6 it would probably start and run but
you wouldn't want to run it very long.
Fry the coil.

Thank you for the reply. It is a 12v conversion and I have installed an electronic ignition. I was most worried about burning up the ignition as they are a bit pricey. Thanks again

12 volts is 12 volts does not matter if it is a 100CCA or a 1000CCA battery but not likely to work if say it gets down to zero

no harm at all
most of mine use em.
CCA range of 150 to 230 depending on where I buy them.
They teach you good maintenance/tuning habits, since they will crank briskly....but not too long.
It won't/can't hurt yer EI at all..12v is 12v, no matter the size of the box...follow instructions on your EI's coil resistance for your systems running voltage and you'll be fine.
Since you are a 12v, EI user, if you haven't already...toss the ammeter and put in a volt gauge...tells you more stuff.
an ammeter will tell you if it is charging, but with an EI, I want to know the exact voltage...at all times.
