NAA half-tracks project

still a work in progress, but Howdy1960 asked me to post a pic.

I bought a set of tracks and idlers off a trailer headed to the scrapyard a few years? ago.
very, very bad condition, everything rusted solid...and no tractor brackets...
Howdy1960 was kind enough to take the unknown brackets off his N and send them my way...Thanks Norm.

i was going to buy an N for the project..but no luck on reasonable here.
So, my combo Sherman NAA got the job.
I won't bore you with the days of work getting rusted parts freed up..you've all been there.
Most difficult was trying to arrange things to use the standard fender position with the 20" wide tracks, so I could put my rear loader on there too....whew.
Well, it's all on and it drives.
I still have to clean/paint things up, and put the assist cylinders on the rear loader.
But, I think I got it beat.
(glad I put it on the Sherman combo NAA...[i:135a893d83]slow[/i:135a893d83] is good with those tracks sliding by my legs  )
I'll put some more pics up when I am done.

ps...I know my NAA is painted wrong..I have quite a few NAA's and I was bored.....

Nice project. I have a set of those tracks sitting by my shop with all the hardware. One
day there going on a 6 cylinder Funk 8n that I restored for a friend of mine a few years
ago.

I have always liked the track drive look but also think about the OH NO moment when a shoe string etc gets hung up in the track and there goes your leg or foot

Looks Great. Will come in handy with a front or back blade if you are in the snow belt.

If you are seriously thinking it a little unsafe . . .
Remember those springy clips we used to use to keep pant legs out of bicycle chains? Use those on your cuffs when using the Half-Track.

You could also make a couple of vertical guards bolted to the foot board edges.

thanks for all the comments guys.
It actually works pretty good. tracks and rear loader.
It doesn't like my hard clay and rock trails but grass, mud is fine, and soon snow it will shine.(watching the tracks pulverize stones with no damage...tough stuff)
Got the loader assist cylinder assembly on today. not plumbed in yet, but there.
Light duty, the loader doesn't really need them, but I'll get em hooked up.

I was just kidding about the safe thing.
Ain't no way to make it safe. Just use my head and don't be dumb I guess. If those tracks come off 'in' at speed...they will rip fenders, guards, whatever, off like nothing.

Kirk, you're right, it needs something on the front. I'll probably put a blade on it...easy.
I really wish I could squeeze a one-arm loader in there too,
but with 20" tracks, I don't think the loader hip elbow will fit.

Royce, this NAA is a Phoenix junior....total junk when I got it....
stuck so bad I had to push it outside and set the cylinders on fire to free it when everything else failed.....

Rich, looks great :)
Glad to be of help and to see the brackets in use instead of just a little more rear axle dead weight.
A set of skis on the front and you'll out do them snowmobilers LOL

Will take a look this weekend for the U-bolts.

1st I've been on-line in a few days do to computer issues.
Got some good woodcutting in at least :)

very nice, those are arps tracks, is the rest of your half track system arps? I have the blackhawk hardware(including boogie
wheels) that i will install the arps tracks on

again very nice

rear tractor mount- Arps Blackhawk off a N Ford
idler arms and wheels-must be arps as they slid right on the arps blackhawk brackets, one size/style fits many-originally on a Allis Chalmers by the remaining paint on em.(the rear foot of the idler assembly is removable and would be tractor specific to mate with the axle mount/springs)
tracks-arps, 20 inches wide...34-35 links as bought, I think without walking out to count. I had to remove 3 links per side to make them fit the 11.2's.
(working on a total unknown pile of parts I went for small rear tires out of my pile....figured tracks too long would be better than too short....)

well, I had to get it out of my shop to do some real work :)
Pretty much done, have to do a little painting here and there.
But, it works very well, after a turn here and there on the adjusters.
Here is a pic of the loader dumping and the tractors fat rear.
I put a thousand series front bumper on the front to fatten up the front til I get a blade on it.
Pulled it in my shed....[i:c6bba91730]just[/i:c6bba91730] makes it....fat LOL
