Rear axle nut

I noticed the other day that the axle nut on the right hand side was loose. Upon examinatin, it was evident that the snap ring was likely sheared (along
with being painted so many times that it could hardly be seen), and when trying to snug it up tight, the axle shaft threads were stripped...just turned
without tightening. I took the nut off the shaft and examined the treads on the shaft...they seemed good further out on the shaft. So, I ordered a new
nut and snap ring and a new washer as well, thinking that I would add one more (they are fairly thick), washer to get the new nut out to where there were
still good threads. Today I put the additional washer on the shaft as planned and installed the new nut and snap ring. Mowed for awhile and it seems to
be holding.

Still nervous about it though...have visions of the wheel coming off...I had an Uncle who was killed on a tractor at age 42. Is my "repair" safe?
Opinions, experiences?

Keep an eye on it, and make further repairs if it keeps loosening.

Typically, after they have been loose for a while the internal splines in the hub are worn and they won't stay tight no matter how many times you tighten them.

Ditto what Bob said.

once run loose, hub and or axle damage has started.

sound slike your axle has already seen some hard life too.

In the past I have rethreaded axles. not fun.. but doable.

You can also get a 2 part axle squeezum nut.

lastly. on an axle that is on it's last legs.. tightent he nut up, run it and tighten till it's not moving anymore.

if all is good and hub not riding too far in.. brakes ok, etc, then just put a blip of weld from top inner diameter of nut to axle. just a blip. that will act as a keeper and keep it from loosening.

when you eventually do 'fix' it, just grind off that blip... by then you may likely be wanting a new axle and nut anyway.. or to weld and rethread the old one. in which case the weld blip will be no issue either way.

Did my brakes and seals abou 2 months ago,48 8n,went to tighten axle nut..no go,had to go to my favorite salvage yard an get a new (used) axle and nut
No biggie all went well

If it turns out you need an axle, I have one in central Michigan.
A pair of them actually.
Email is open if you're interested in talking about it.
