ballast resistor P/n?

stopped this morning & picked up a resistor it drops v from 12 to 8 but its not a ballast resistor, what is the max volt drop with a ballast resistor? thanks for any info

There's NOT enough information in your post to allow for a meaningful answer.

Voltage dropped across a resistor is determined by it's resistance and the current passing through it.

In addition, the resistance of a "ballast resistor" varies with it's temperature, which is affected by ambient temperature, and the current passing through it.

Are you trying to drop enough voltage to run a "6 Volt" (actually, about 4.5 Volt coil) on a 12 Volt system?

my 12v 8n runs crappy after 30 minutes, so I installed new coil & research the resistor, I didn't see a resistor on the tractor so I bought one, the resistor helped the coil from breaking down so fast...cant bushhog in second gear though...

You should not brush hog in 2nd gear any how much to fast unless just mowing a lawn. Always trouble shoot then worry about parts. Check spark and gas flow then go form there

which 8n do you have? the side mount dist ones do not use the ballast resistor.

Here is the p/n w/ a terminal block.

Do you have a 12 volt coil? (see tip # 30 at the link)
