Do you think I could use John Deere low or high
viscosity HyTran (or whatever their product is
called) to top off the rearend in my 8N? I know I
have changed it in years past but I couldn't tell you
what I put in there. The PTO seal is on the winter
repair list but I want to do a little barnyard mowing
with it. It may not even be too low, but I know all I
have around is the JD stuff for all of the other
machines.

The "regular" HyTran (J20C) is a standard UTF type oil (e.g. Ford M2C-134D) and will work fine as a fresh fill or make-up oil. I wouldn't worry about using small quantities of the low viscosity (J20D) version as a make-up oil but unless you are in really frigid climate it is probably not the best choice for a full fill.

I use the UTF with the Ford specs year-round with good service. When I change it,it's still clear as it was when filled. I researched the UTF and found that it corresponds to 50W gear oil. In my Toyota truck,I can't find GL-4 gear oil,so I use 50w oil with much improved shifting.

I agree with your assessment but you need to double check your research. There is no such thing as 50W gear oil. Gear oil viscosity grades start at SAE 80 (7.0 to <11.0 cSt @ 100C) and UTF comes in very near the top of that range - 9.5-10.5 cSt @100C for most products. Viscosity wise SAE 50 motor oil (16.3 - <21.9 csT @ 100C) is a good bit heavier than an average SAE 90 gear oil (13.5 - <18.5 cSt @ 100C)
